A Light in His Classroom (H.O.P.E –Bekaa)

God created us as social beings, we interact with everything around us and everyone we meet. What makes each person special is what he chooses to accept and learn from his environment, the way he understands it based on his cognitive style, and the style of life and values in his parent’s house. That’s why we always aim at HOPE Center to create an atmosphere that allows the students to learn and witness the Christian values, by inspiring change in every dimension of one’s life. Ahmad Khodor, a second-year student at the HOPE center, exemplifies these qualities, showing how the center’s blend of moral and educational guidance creates a foundation for well-rounded personal development.

Ahmad is a very kind boy; he always helps others in need and respects his teacher and classmates. He is work-oriented and finishes his given assignments on time. He shows active participation in discussions and also presents his point of view with full confidence. Indeed, one day during one of his English classes, Ahmad brought out this strength of his character when he overheard a friend bullying a classmate. His friend taunted the student, saying, “We shouldn’t let him play football with us because he’s too weak. He barely knows how to read or write, so he’ll make us lose the game.” Ahmad intervened, saying, “Stop bullying him. He may be struggling, but that’s no reason to treat him this way. Instead, we should be helping him, teaching him, and standing by him. We are all special in God’s eyes, each with special talents given by God.”

The teacher, noticing the conversation, approached them and asked about the issue. Ahmad explained, saying, “Teacher, he’s bullying our friend, and I’m trying to encourage him to help others instead of criticizing and belittling people.” He went on to explain that he learned at the center, through chapel sessions and Bible stories, the importance of respecting and valuing others, and helping them, because “God calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

Afterward, the teacher noticed that Ahmad was still using his notebook from the previous year. She asked, “Ahmad, why are you still using your old notebook?” He replied, “I want to keep it as a memory so I never forget that this center was where I first learned to read and write. This place is special to me because it gave me my first opportunity to learn.” His words reflected his gratitude to both God and the center where he learned about the only source of all good things and blessings.

Ahmad’s story highlights how Hope Educational Center nurtures students not only academically but also morally and spiritually, creating a lasting impact that helps them grow into compassionate and resilient individuals.

Jihan’s Story

Jihan’s childhood was fractured. Forced to leave her family at just seven years old, she sought refuge with her older sister in Aleppo, clinging to the hope of an education. But those dreams were shattered when her sister married, and Jihan, at thirteen, found herself back home, her schooling abruptly ended. Life became a cycle of helping her parents in their olive grove, the years blending into one another until, at thirty, she found love and married.

But their newfound happiness was tragically cut short. War erupted in Syria, tearing families apart and forcing Jihan and her husband to flee to Lebanon. They arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a desperate hope for safety. Soon, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, but the struggle to survive in a foreign land, coupled with the prejudice they faced as Kurds, left them feeling lost and alone.

Just when their hope was fading, they encountered Heart for Lebanon. Our team embraced them, providing not just essential food and supplies, but also the warmth of human connection and the unwavering support of prayer. The Kurdish church services at Heart for Lebanon’s Hope Evangelical Church became a lifeline, a place where they could hear God’s word in their own language and find solace in a community that truly understood them.

Jihan, who had been robbed of her own education, yearned for a different future for her daughter. Through our H.O.P.E. (Helping Overcome Poverty through Education) Program, her daughter found a path to learning, a chance to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter tomorrow.

But the transformation didn’t stop there. Jihan, once burdened by bitterness and resentment, discovered the healing power of forgiveness through Christ’s love. “Thank you,” she shares with tears in her eyes, “for your material and spiritual care… Many things in my life have changed because of these lessons.”

Jihan’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and the transformative power of faith. Heart for Lebanon was there, offering a hand up and a path to hope. From the ashes of despair, Jihan and her family found a new beginning, a life filled with purpose and the promise of a future filled with God’s love.

Grace Amidst Trails

Adel was born in 1962 in Taalabaya, Bekaa, Lebanon, into a family consisting of a mother, father, a brother, and five sisters. He was the eldest among his siblings. His father owned four car repair workshops, and the family was financially comfortable. Adel studied at a private school in Taalabaya until the ninth grade, as there were no higher grades available at this school. Later he transferred to another school in Zahle, where he excelled academically.

In 1975, Lebanon was engulfed in a severe war. The roads between Taalabaya and Zahle were not functioning normally due to the war, which forced Adel to leave his school. Due to the danger in their area, the family had to move to live with their aunt in Jalala. Sadly, their house was destroyed later by a missile strike.

After the war ended, Adel’s family faced the daunting task of rebuilding their lives. Adel’s father rented a house, and he opened a small grocery store. Adel helped his father in the shop, and he earned a modest income. After working with his father for twenty years, Adel decided to pursue agriculture seeking new opportunities and challenges.

In 2003, he met and married Silva, but their desire for children remained unfulfilled. Sixteen years into their marriage, Silva fell ill with cancer and passed away, which was very difficult for Adel.

Adel has gone through numerous challenges and hardships, from facing the turmoil of war to enduring his wife’s battle with cancer and eventual passing. Despite the weight of these trials, Adel found strength and solace after accepting Jesus as His personal Savior. In the midst of his struggles, his faith became a source of comfort and hope, and he found light in the midst of his darkness.

One day, the “Hope Evangelical Church” team was reassuring and following up with Adel’s sister at her flower shop. During this visit, the team had the opportunity to meet her brother, Adel. Adel and the team discussed certain concepts about the Bible, but Adel expressed harsh opinions and misconceptions about the teachings of the Scriptures. The team responded respectfully by using verses from the Bible. At the end of the conversation, they invited Adel to attend church meetings on Sundays.

Curious to know more, Adel attended church and found himself drawn to the worship and preaching. The warmth of the community and the depth of the teachings resonated deeply with him. Adel actively participated in various church activities. Through the guidance of mentors and the study of scripture, his understanding of the gospel deepened. Eventually, he made the profound decision to get baptized and share his testimony and spiritual journey publicly. During his baptism, he proclaimed who Jesus is to him and expressed his commitment to follow him throughout his life.

After that, the church pastor invited him to attend leadership training classes to become an effective leader in the church field. Adel enthusiastically participated in these classes, and he even volunteered with the church’s visitation team.

Adel expressed his gratitude for the love and care he received from the church. He always prays for strength and wisdom for himself and all servants of God, and he prays for all people thirsty for the word of the Lord like he once was.

Through trials and loss, Jesus turned Adel’s sorrow into happiness, his weakness into power, and his turmoil into peace.

Youssef’s Story

Since the outbreak of fighting along Lebanon’s southern borders about a year ago, the country has endured increasingly difficult times. The conflict reached a devastating climax in September 2024, when over a thousand airstrikes hit southern Lebanon and other regions in less than 24 hours. The bombardments caused widespread destruction, death, and devastation, forcing many Lebanese families to flee their homes. Entire villages were left paralyzed, with life coming to a standstill. Prolonged electricity and telephone blackouts exacerbated the situation in some of the regions.

Youssef, an 87-year-old man, lives in the small village of Azzeh (Southern Lebanon) with his wife, where they have lived most of their lives. Before the economic crisis, Youssef and his family lived comfortably, able to provide for their needs. But as Lebanon plunged into economic turmoil, their situation deteriorated. Today, they find themselves struggling to meet even their basic necessities. Without the financial support of their children, making ends meet would be impossible.

The couple’s three children all live abroad. However, Youssef and his wife are only in contact with their youngest son, who checks on them from time to time. The neglect from their other children weighs heavily on their hearts, adding to their feelings of loneliness. Despite the distance and fractured relationships, Youssef finds comfort in the regular visits from neighbors, whose kindness helps them manage their household needs. Youssef gratefully acknowledges this, saying, “We are thankful to the Lord for always putting good people in our path, who show us the love and mercy of Christ.”

Health issues plague the couple. Youssef, who suffers from severe visual impairment, depends on his wife to guide him, especially to their beloved church, the Hope Evangelical Church in Ghazieh, which they attend every Sunday despite their physical struggles. Youssef often recalls how, when he could still see, he read the Bible and came to believe deeply in the Lord Jesus.

The war has only deepened their challenges. Azzeh, once a bustling diverse village, now feels desolate. Most of the residents fled the heavy bombardments, leaving only Youssef’s family and his brother’s. The houses surrounding them were destroyed, but Youssef and his wife remain, trapped by the ongoing conflict. Amid the chaos, the elderly couple relies on a portion of food they received from Heart for Lebanon just days before the latest bombings began.

When contacted, Youssef’s voice carried both relief and gratitude. “Thank you for remembering us… We’re still fine,” he said. He explained how they cannot leave their home due to the constant shelling of their village and nearby areas. The war has cut them off from much-needed medical supplies and other essentials. Yet even in this dire situation, Youssef expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Thank you for never forgetting us, by never forgetting to check on us and always supporting us with food. Pray for us to get our medications. No one is able to enter or leave the village.”

Youssef and his wife continue to find joy in the simplest moments. He often shares amusing anecdotes from his life and testimonies during visits, filling the room with laughter and warmth. The Heart for Lebanon home visits, whether they have spiritual goals or just for check-ups, are precious to this elderly couple and Heart for Lebanon’s team. Heart for Lebanon is committed to supporting vulnerable individuals during these difficult times.

You may have heard this statement before

Over the last few weeks I have heard a lot of theories.  There have been some very positive conversations and some conspiracy theories; some are just not true and some sound good, but after thinking about it, I’ll rethink and say, “wait a minute that’s not right”.

Then in an email I received from a seminary I take continuing education course from, the first line read: “Don’t let the world teach you theology.”  Michael Easley has said this often.  This warning especially deserves attention as we are in a season of many interruptions, the war in Lebanon is raging, natural disasters here in the USA etc. all these events and other events have caught my attention recently as I have talked to many people. Even in good times, the world preaches a “sermon” of anxiety and worry and today it seems to me that more Christians are worried and full of anxiety. To be honest this is concerning to me.

So how should you and I respond to to unexpected events taking place around us?  The answer for those of us as followers of Jesus is, we must choose peace right where we are.

We live in a fallen world so we are not operating as we should be. We are not bent this way because every day, we encounter the reality of a broken world. The world we live in is not as Christ intended it to be. Disruptions of various kinds may upset our peace. Hurricane Helene and Milton come, or war comes, and our “peace” is interrupted. Our relationships aren’t always as they should be. We may experience anxiety due to our materialistic and fast-paced culture in which we must adjust to and live, is not easy and anxiety takes over and then peace departs.

As a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit indwelling you, gives you and I the power to choose peace (Romans 8:6). I love the scripture where Paul shares with the Philippians (Chapter 1:12-29) that had to choose to have this kind of attitude in order to achieve “peace”. Its true, I have proven it; life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it.

In fact, throughout the Bible, God invites us to rest in Him and His truth even when the world seems to be falling apart, or our personal lives are rocked by some big, unexpected event.  God gives us a road map for a peace that overcomes in the midst of our storms. Lean into Jesus the author of our faith, during these times.

Restoring Hope

by May-Lee Melki Constantine

Not only is Lebanon mentioned more than 70 times in the Old Testament, in today’s world Lebanon is the only Middle Eastern country whose constitution requires the appointment of a Christian president. The country of Lebanon has also been at the center of many political and strategic plans. No matter how you have heard of Lebanon, I am sure you have heard how the Lebanese Church has endured and thrived under many challenges.

Today, Heart for Lebanon’s calling is no different than the calling of the early church: to make disciples of Jesus. Through a team of courageous, and passionate followers of Jesus we are witnessing miracles of God’s divine protection and wisdom as He carefully leads our team into dangerous areas where His sons and daughters need help.

From day 1 Heart for Lebanon has operated under the slogan “moving people from despair to hope.” That slogan has not changed but has rather taken on a much-needed immediate task which is to “restore hope” to hurting families. We know full well that Jesus is the only one who can restore our souls, but we also understand our calling to be His hands and feet.

One of the young boys whom we serve through our Children-at-risk program shared with us this week his daily fear of losing his friends. He was fortunate to be able to flee his home in Southern Lebanon and is currently being cared for in a nurturing and safe environment to heal by our team in Beirut. Through art therapy, music lessons, and games, children are expressing their deep fears and emotions.

This kind of work is more than just an immediate response to the current war that is plaguing a beautiful country with much Biblical and historical significance. This kind of work requires a lifelong investment into deep relationships with children and their parents for them to get to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

Far beyond this active war, Heart for Lebanon’s commitment will be to deepen its relationships with the newly added displaced families it cares for. Together, our team, investors, and prayer partners are creating faith defining environments that lead to life transforming relationships.

Thank you for getting excited with us about doing ministry in Lebanon. Our faith, hope, and trust are in God alone as He continues to show us the importance and purpose of this ministry that He allowed to exist for the last 18 years in the country of Lebanon.

Join us in restoring Hope to a hurting nation this year.
