Ahlam, Story

Ahlam is from Afrin, Syria. She came to Lebanon with her family when she was young. They had a house in Syria, but they lost it during the war. Now, Ahlam lives with her family in a very small house in the Bekaa, Lebanon. She has two brothers and one sister, and they all live together in one small room with a kitchen and a bathroom. This living situation has been challenging for Ahlam.

“I wish we lived in a better house where everyone had their own room and could do whatever they wanted,” she said

“I don’t feel like I have any privacy or personal time. Even when I want to study, there’s no quiet place to concentrate because of the noise. Sometimes I just want to spend time alone feeling peaceful and relaxed but I can’t.”

The family’s financial situation is very difficult. They struggle to afford their basic needs like food, heating and clothes. Ahlam’s parents work hard to provide for their children, but it’s not enough.

“There are many things I’d like to do and learn, but because of the hard-financial situation, I cannot.  I’d love to learn drawing and English, but I can’t join a course or have a private teacher because of our circumstances. Sometimes I need things, but my parents cannot buy them for me. For example, I need a new pair of shoes because my old shoes are worn out. I feel sad about this, but I understand that my parents are working hard for us and struggling, and I thank God for everything anyway.” She added

Despite these challenges Ahlam has found support through the ‘Children at Risk’ program, which she has been attending for about two years. This program has helped her develop good values and morals, improve her personality, build stronger relationships, and grow in her thinking and attitude. She has also acquired knowledge of the Bible and became familiar with most of the characters like Joseph, Abraham, David, Job…

Ahlam shares her experience of joining the program, “I used to see my friends near my house going to the club, so l asked them about it. They told me that they learn about God there, listen to stories, do fun activities, and play sports. I got really excited and wanted to join and go with them. I’m very happy I got the chance to be part of the club and learn more about God.”

Like many other children, Jesus has profoundly changed Ahlam’s life for the better. “Many things have changed in my life. Spiritually, I got to know Jesus better and learned more about His love and how He treated others.

Socially, l used to be very shy. I didn’t have any friends, I didn’t share my thoughts or opinions, and I stayed home most of the time. But now, my personality has become stronger. I’m no longer shy, I feel more confident, and I can talk, play, and share with others without fear.

Mentally, I used to think very negatively. I was easily hurt by people’s words and would stay sad for a long time. But now I think more positively, especially after learning in a discussion that people look at the eyes, but God looks at the heart. People may judge us by how we look, and not everyone will like our appearance. If someone says something negative, I try not to let it upset me, because it’s not what matters. What really matters is how God sees us. God cares about our hearts, so we should take care of them and be careful with our words, thoughts, and actions.”

Ahlam has also learned valuable lessons about forgiveness and patience.

“I was also touched by an object lesson that taught me to forgive from the heart and not hold grudges. I always try to be soft like a sponge, not hard or cold like a stone. I learned not to treat others in a harsh or unkind way. Along with learning to forgive, I also learned the importance of patience and not giving up when things get hard. I once thought about leaving school because I was struggling to understand the lessons, especially English. But when I heard this advice, I tried harder, worked on myself, paid more attention in class, and now my grades have improved, and I’m getting closer to my goals.

Ahlam also enjoys the truck program, where she can learn new things, play with friends, and have fun with clowns.

“When I hear about the truck program, I feel happy because I know it’s time to learn something new, sit with my friends, play, listen to a new story, and have fun with the clowns. I love watching the play because I learn lessons from the two characters, Shaghoub, the troublemaker, and Akkoul, the wise one. Akkoul is always positive, behaves well, doesn’t get angry, and has a great personality. I try to be like him and act like him. He always advises his friend Shaghoub when he does something wrong, and he does this to help him grow closer to God.” She said happily

Through the program, Ahlam's life has undergone significant changes. It helped her grow stronger in her faith, and she started praying with more confidence.

Please lift up Ahlam and her family in your prayers. Pray that she will continue to grow in her faith.

Dalal Al-Sawan, Story

Dalal Al-Sawan, born in 1992 in the countryside of Homs, grew up in a large and very strict family that denied women their basic rights. She completed only her elementary education, as the rigid traditions of her environment deprived girls of the freedom to choose their future, believing that a woman’s role was limited to marriage and childbearing.

Dalal spent her youth working alongside her parents and siblings in agricultural fields until she was married at the age of nineteen. The marriage, imposed on her by custom rather than choice, brought her neither stability nor peace. Her husband was uneducated, harsh, and abusive both physically and verbally. Living in her husband’s family home, Dalal endured years of isolation and suffering, cut off from her loved ones and stripped of her sense of dignity—like a bird trapped in a cage.

When the war in Syria erupted, Dalal fled with her husband and children to Lebanon, eventually settling in Zahle. Reflecting on that painful chapter, Dalal shared:
“I thank the Lord for the war, because it opened the door of my prison and allowed me to fly free. Even though life was unstable, I finally breathed away from the suffocating strictness of my husband’s family.”

In Zahle, Dalal worked in agricultural fields to support her children, while her husband worked with livestock. One day, he contracted brucellosis and returned alone to Syria for treatment. Since then, he has disappeared completely, leaving Dalal to face life as the sole provider for her family, burdened by responsibility, uncertainty, and growing health concerns of her own.

As the pressures of life mounted, Dalal’s physical health began to deteriorate. Persistent pain and fatigue became part of her daily struggle, yet medical care remained out of reach due to high costs. It was during this difficult time that neighbors invited her to attend Bible study meetings at Heart for Lebanon, where she found both spiritual comfort and practical support. Through these visits, Dalal became acquainted with our medical clinic and began receiving regular medical consultations and essential medications.

Dalal shared:
“I recently visited your medical clinic, where the specialist doctor performed an ultrasound for me; something I could never afford elsewhere.”

The imaging test revealed that Dalal suffers from a uterine fibroid, a condition that requires medical follow-up and surgical intervention. For Dalal, this diagnosis was both frightening and relieving: frightening because of the surgery ahead, yet relieving because, for the first time, her pain had a name and a path toward healing.

Bible Study

Elio is an 11-year-old Christian boy who lives with his family in Zahle, Bekaa. He’s smart, respectful, kind and full of energy.

Elio also has a younger brother. The team often notices how much he loves him, takes care of him, and always looks out for him. His favorite hobby is playing football.

“I really enjoy coming to the ‘Children at Risk’ program every week,” Elio said. I meet my friends, we listen to stories from the Bible, we play football, practice together and have fun. I’ve improved my skills, understood the game better, and learned how to control the ball more.” Elio said

Through these weekly gatherings, Elio made new friends and became more confident.  He also built a strong relationship with Jesus and gained important values.

Once, the team explained to the children how important and powerful prayer is. Lately, they have been impressed by how much this lesson has impacted Elio. He shared, “I encouraged my friend to pray because I believe that God gives us rest, joy, and peace. My friend was really sad and upset. He was even crying. I went to him and said, ‘I want to pray with you so you can feel better.’ He was surprised because no one had done that for him before, but then he felt calm and happy. He thanked me, and our friendship became even stronger.”

Elio has a Bible and reads it almost every day. He now knows most of the stories and many verses. One of his favorite verses is from Ephesians 2:8 ‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.’

This verse reminds him that salvation is a free gift from God, received through faith, not something we can earn by doing good deeds.

God’s Word has helped Elio change how he thinks, acts, and lives.

“I feel calm, peaceful, and happy when I’m at the club. I can really feel God’s presence there. The team helped me get to know Jesus better. Jesus is loving, kind, patient, forgiving, and humble. He is my only Savior, Redeemer, and friend. I always talk to him and ask for wisdom, guidance, forgiveness, and encouragement.” Elio expressed happily

“Sometimes I used to be naughty, but when I learned God’s commandment to honor my parents, I changed and I started to listen, obey and respect them.”

He learned valuable lessons from biblical figures.  From the story of Abraham and Sarah, he understood the importance of telling the truth and that lying is a sin. From the story of David and Mephibosheth, he learned that God gives us everything at the right time, just as He gave David the kingdom. And from the story of Jonah, he realized that we must listen to God, obey Him and share His Word to others.

Christmas Story

Christmas Peace in a Broken Heart

Ismat was a child like any other he loved to play, his heart was full of dreams, and his passion for learning shone in his eyes every time he heard new information or listened to a story. But the war in Syria came and stole childhood from countless children, and Ismat was one of them. His life changed overnight, forcing his family to flee their home in search of safety.

For a while, life remained heavy and uncertain. Then, a new chapter began when Ismat’s family found Heart for Lebanon. They started attending church, and Ismat enrolled in school and joined the Children at Risk program. As time passed, he began sharing what he learned with his friends, and he would go home eager to tell his family everything he discovered.

Among all the stories he heard, the story of the birth of Jesus touched him the most. He spoke about it with great enthusiasm, saying, “Jesus came to give the world peace, love, and hope. He was crucified for us, and we shouldn’t listen to the devil or let him control us. We should put the Lord first in our lives and not envy others.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, Ismat shared that his life before knowing Jesus was filled with sadness; the war had taken away many things he loved. But after encountering Christ and allowing His light to enter his heart, everything changed he found peace. This transformation was visible not only in his words but also in his actions and behavior. He went from being a shy, silent child to one who participates, interacts, and learns with confidence.

Ismat is living proof that hope can rise even in the harshest circumstances, and that the light of Christ can reach hearts wounded by war and loss.

Pray with us that Jesus continues to fill Ismat’s heart with peace and guide him as he grows in faith, and that other children affected by war may also find hope in Christ.

Christmas Story

Rimas is a 12-year-old Syrian girl who lives in Al Manana camp in Sarafand. She is one of the most active participants in the Children at Risk activities, as she never misses a session of the activities she is involved in, and she always arrives with great enthusiasm that catches the team’s attention. “Her passion is clear in her constant engagement with the activities, whether educational or recreational, as she always takes the initiative to participate and share ideas,” said one staff member overseeing activities where she participates.

Rimas is also known for her spirit of cooperation. She helps the team by assisting the children who live with her in the camp, encouraging them to join the activities and interact during the sessions. Her presence creates an atmosphere of joy and energy, and “she is considered a positive role model for the other participants.”

The team shared a Christmas story and they noticed how interested she was in the topic and how eager she was to learn more and become more attached to it. She followed the story with great focus and showed increasing fascination with every part that was told. After the story ended, Rimas told us that she loves Christmas stories very much and that she feels joy and peace whenever she hears about the birth of Jesus. She also expressed her desire to learn more similar stories and to participate regularly in the spiritual activities that give her inspiration and comfort.

The team appreciates her dedication, her energy, and her constant smile, “she has a love for life despite the difficult circumstances she faces in the camp.”

Rimas told us: “I love Jesus’ birthday more than any other holiday! Every year, when December comes, my heart overflows with joy and happiness. I adore the Christmas tree lights sparkling in all their colors, and I love the shiny baubles that glimmer when sunlight or lamps touch them. I also love the thought of gifts under the tree… “

Rimas also says: “I tell all my friends Do you know? When Jesus was born, the wise men brought Him beautiful gifts from far away, guided by the shining stars above. And the shepherds, who were in the fields, came to visit Him with warm hearts full of love. They were the first to see Him and honored Him in a very special way!”

“I also love to draw this whole story in a special Christmas picture. I draw a big tree full of colors and lights, the wise men carrying their gifts, the shepherds near the manger with the sheep and chickens, and stars twinkling in the sky. Every year, I try to add more details, and it makes me happy when I see my drawings hanging in my room or when I give them to my family. Drawing… it’s how I tell Jesus’ story and share my joy with the world.”

Rimas tell “For me, gifts aren’t just pretty things… they’re a way to show love and joy, just like the wise men brought gifts to Jesus. And the warmth we give to one another, like the shepherds who visited Him in the cold, helps us live the true spirit of Christmas. Every year, when I decorate the tree and place my drawings next to the gifts, my heart feels full of love and peace.

Jesus’ birthday isn’t just lights, a tree, and gifts… it’s joy, love, the warmth of our hearts, and drawing His story in my own way reminds me that the most important thing is to love each other, be happy, and give just like God gave us the greatest gift… Jesus Christ!”

“Jesus gives us a sense of safety and lets us express ourselves with love and joy. On His birthday, I love to give Him a special flower because He was born in a simple stable, not a palace, on a cold night. Despite the simplicity and the chilly air, His birth brought great warmth to the world.”

“Every year, as I decorate the tree, light up the colorful lights, and hang the shiny baubles, I imagine the beautiful scene in the stable: stars twinkling above, the wise men carrying gifts from afar, and the shepherds coming with hearts full of love. Every gift, every act of love, reminds us of the greatest gift Jesus gave us His presence and His love, filling our hearts with joy and peace.

I wish to share this joy with everyone, imagining myself giving gifts just like the people who brought gifts to Jesus on the night of His birth. Every flower I place, every drawing I make, every light I switch on the tree fills me with the spirit of Christmas: love, giving, and heartfelt joy just as Jesus gave us love and safety from that humble stable so long ago.”

Missional Leadership

Wahib is a Lebanese citizen born and raised in a Christian family. He used to read the Bible and knew the Lord from his youth. Nevertheless, his spiritual life had many ups and downs.

In 1991 he joined the Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Saida and was appointed as an elder as well. His faith life was not steady as he experienced some pitfalls. He knew pastor Milad for a long time but did not join the missional leadership program until mid-2022.

Wahib mentioned, “All the lessons in the missional leadership program were a blessing to my life and to all those attending. I am very thankful for all the leaders, the pastors, and for the exemplary ministry servants in Hope Evangelical Church Ghazieh.”

Missional Leadership

Lucine’s life took a major turn when she met the brothers and sisters in HOPE Evangelical Church Zahle. She said happily, “Everything in my life became much better. I started to love the bible study program, and later the discipleship program.”

After attending some missional leadership lessons, Lucine got baptized after things were clearer to her, and was sure that Jesus’ grace saved her. She felt like having a new family in Christ with which she is now able to interact, share her plans and struggles, and love dearly.

Though Lucine used to be a student in a Christian school supervised by nuns, and though the Bible was not foreign to her, she was not as close to God or Jesus as she is today. Due to the missional leadership lessons and Bible study lessons, she became more interested in the Bible and biblical passages.

She is now able to differentiate between the Old and New Testaments and their importance; she learned how both are linked beautifully and is now able to study the Bible on a deeper level.

Lucine is now more able to understand the will of God in her life and is thankful to the Lord for His grace.

After attending the leadership program for almost a year now, Ismail has been actively telling others about the Lord, thus showing obedience to the great mission Jesus set. He learnt how to be honest, patient in times of trouble, and how to be obedient to the elders in church.

Ismail is very attentive in the training, and he shared that he learned the characters of God and the meaning of serving together as brothers and sisters in Christ, besides some tips for growing a healthy family.

Ferial-1
Story

Three Years Discipleship Growth Program

Ferial, a 61-year-old Palestinian-Syrian woman, has faced many trials since fleeing to Lebanon before the Syrian war. A widow living alone and without children, her daily life has been marked by hardship. After an accident caused by complications of diabetes, where she fell into a hole and broke her shoulder, Ferial’s health and mobility worsened. Her right foot needed surgery too, but with no money for the operation, she could only wear a brace. Financially vulnerable, she relies on the help of her married sisters and kind neighbors for meals and basic needs. Living alone in a rented house near Ghazieh, she longed for community and support.

A Compassionate Neighbor Introduces Faith

One of Ferial’s neighbors is Rasha, a missional leadership trained leader in the 3-year Discipleship Growth Program run by the Hope Evangelical Church and Heart for Lebanon. Over time, Ferial had noticed Rasha going to church and became curious. When Ferial finally asked about it, Rasha eagerly shared her faith. “I explained to her about why I attend church, about who Jesus is, Christian life, faith in Christ, and baptism,” Rasha said.

Recognizing Ferial’s interest, Rasha asked if she would join a small house Bible study group. This discipleship growth program trains leaders like Rasha to guide neighbors through Scripture and spiritual conversations. Grateful for the invitation, Ferial agreed, and Rasha began holding bi-monthly Bible study sessions in Ferial’s living room. These sessions brought the hope of Christ into Ferial’s daily life for the first time.

Growing in Faith Through Bible Studies

Over the past year, Ferial faithfully attended each study session. In these intimate gatherings, she learned about Jesus’s love, forgiveness, and the joy of Christian community. “Ferial is a spiritually thirsty woman,” Rasha observed. “She has a simple heart, and the Word entered her heart as soon as she heard it. She’s very teachable and is always asking questions.”

Through these discussions, Ferial’s faith deepened. She declared Jesus as her Savior and expressed a heartfelt desire to be baptized as soon as possible. She said, “I love reading the Bible, especially when I have someone to discuss it with. One time we studied forgiveness and love from the Bible and it really touched my heart.” Encouraged by these studies, she asked Rasha for her own Bible. When the discipleship program team provided her a new Bible and other materials, Ferial was overjoyed. “Until a baptism ceremony is available, I want to know Christ more,” she told Rasha.

Overcoming Challenges to Join the Church Family

Rasha also invited Ferial to join the Hope Evangelical Church community, but Ferial’s frail health and lack of transportation made regular attendance difficult. Despite these barriers, Ferial made it to church a few times and always came away encouraged by the worship and preaching.

One particularly meaningful experience was a women’s ministry meeting at the church. “When I brought her to the Hope Evangelical Church women’s meeting, she was deeply touched,” Rasha recalled. During the session, Ferial even shared her thoughts and left in tears, moved by the love and prayers of the sisters around her.

Practical Support and Community Care

The Heart for Lebanon team recognized her difficult situation and ensured she received much-needed help. Recently, upon inspections, Heart for Lebanon’s Family Care Team registered Ferial in the assistance program and began delivering vital supplies to her home. Ferial now benefit from:

  • Monthly food packages to ease her hunger and health needs.
  • Household essentials (like detergents and personal care items) to improve her living conditions.
  • Spiritual learning materials so she can continue growing in faith each day.

These practical gifts have made a noticeable difference. Ferial shared her gratitude with Rasha, saying, “Heart for Lebanon’s team were all good with me and they treat me very well.” She even added a heartfelt blessing for those who helped her: “I pray that God will make you happy and grant you success in your work.” With both spiritual guidance and tangible support, Ferial’s life is steadily changing.

A New Beginning in Faith and Community

Today, Ferial’s heart is full of hope. No longer isolated, she has a caring small group led by Rasha and a church family lifting her in prayer. Her journey reflects the goals of the Discipleship Growth Plan: to bring people of all backgrounds into a living relationship with Christ and one another. Through this program, Ferial has moved from loneliness to community, from uncertainty to faith, and from hardship to help.

As she looks forward to her baptism and deeper walks in faith, Ferial embodies the transformation that is possible when God’s love is shared through people. Discipleship and community support can change lives. With continued support, Heart for Lebanon and the Hope Evangelical Church aim to see hundreds more like Ferial embrace hope and purpose through Christ.

Fteim-1
Story

Bible Study

In every Bible study, we meet women from different backgrounds, carrying different burdens. Each one of them has a story.

Fteim is a refugee from Syria, and a mother of four: Jalal, Abed Al Razzak, Ahmad, and Nada. She lives in a simple home, on the edge of daily life, but it holds a strange warmth and hope. She works in anything she can find, planting, cleaning, collecting plastic, to provide food for her children.

She got to know Heart for Lebanon in 2023. Heart for Lebanon started supporting her with monthly food portions and detergents. She says that she never forgot that moment when the team visited her for the first time and asked about her. When she was invited to a Bible study, she smiled and said: “You visited me, why wouldn’t I visit you?“

She said calmly: “No one asked me to change anything. I felt comfortable. Maybe for the first time, I felt I wasn’t forced or judged.“

Since that moment, she has been attending for a year and a half without missing a class. She asks many questions, not to doubt, but from a heart thirsty for knowledge. She was excited to learn about the Old Testament, and today, she dives into the words of the New Testament.

She said: “I used to be very angry, always fighting with my neighbors. But when I heard about love, and forgiveness, and started to pray, I felt my heart slowly calming down. Now, before I get angry, I count to ten.“

But the moment that touched her the most was when we talked about the birth of Christ.
“I thought He was born in a palace, like prophets and kings. I was surprised to learn He was born in a stable. Oh God, how deeply this touched me! If Christ chose humility like that, what are money and appearances compared to this kind of love?“
“I thought I was poor, but He was born poorer than me. I felt how close He is to us; how much He knows us, our pain, and our hunger.“

After each class, Fteim doesn’t just go home, she takes the Word with her and shares it with her children. She sits with them and tells them about Jesus, about how they should love their friends, forgive each other, and try to be good people.

“If I’m changing, I want them to become better too. Because the Lord starts with one heart, but He can change a family, a neighborhood, maybe even a country.”

“I want my children to know how to love, to forgive, and to be good people like Christ,” she says, with eyes full of longing for a better future for her children.

Today, Fteim still works, still struggles, and still lives a hard life. But her heart is no longer the same. There is light. There is hope. There is a growing relationship between her and the Lord every day.
