What an incredible summer in 2024

Our Summer of Hope campaign was incredibly successful thanks to the over 270 individuals who responded with radical generosity to ensure that all of the children at Heart for Lebanon’s Children-at-risk Initiative were provided for and fully supported this summer! What a God-sized response!

Despite all the negative loud voices around us (war-related talks and fears of further escalation) our students loved every program offered. They enjoyed constructive, Bible-based, fun oriented, educationally motivated sessions. Most of all, they enjoyed fellowship in a safe and welcoming environment. This is just one story that was made possible because of amazing partners like you, THANK YOU so much!

Now the work of discipling these children and their families begins. This discipleship process for some will take place in H.O.P.E. Educational Program, for others they will be part of our Children-at-Risk programs. Both programs, just like everything else at Heart for Lebanon are focused on Making Disciples of Jesus.

Will you pray with us? Prayer is needed for the children and their families as we serve them in Jesus name. Prayer for their safety, their education, prayer for them to have the peace only God can provide, and prayer for the gospel to accelerate in their regions. We also ask for prayer for our team and their families.

As you pray for our time, we would also like to pray for you! We believe in the power of prayer and we want to bring your prayer requests to the Lord. Please let us know how we can pray for you by sending your requests to prayer@heartforlebanon.org

Home Maintenance Program

Did you know that Heart for Lebanon has a Home Maintenance Program?

Heart for Lebanon’s Home Maintenance Program is a program that targets people living in inadequate residences, including unfinished buildings, vulnerable tents, and old residences. The intervention may include waterproofing, heat proofing, electricity work, plumbing, and sanitation.

Hadi works as a contract technical institute teacher and has a limited monthly income. He lives with his only son, Adam, in his house in Maghdouche. Hadi’s son, aged 5, is neurodivergent. Hadi couldn’t afford a private electricity subscription. As a result, Hadi and his son had to spend many nights under the candles’ light.

The Family Care Team visited Hadi to check the house and figure out what the damages, malfunctions, and problems in it. There were many electricity malfunctions, and wiring, batteries, and inverter problems. Hadi says: “What bothers us the most is the inability to have electricity, as the fees are high and I cannot afford it. It is difficult to live without lights and electricity in the house.”

The team examined the house and the power system.

Later, we obtained quotations, calculated prices for the needed appliances, and provided Hadi with what he needed. Hadi’s house took 3 weeks

of work, then the electrical system was functioning well.

On the Home Maintenance Project, Hadi said: “I am grateful to Heart for Lebanon who helped me install a solar energy system. My son and I now have [electricity] in the house. I appreciate it.”

I Only Knew Him as the Creator

Mohamad and his family, originally from Syria, fled their homeland in 2012, seeking refuge in Lebanon. They settled in the Bekaa Valley, hoping to find safety. Mohamad is the father of four children: Dilivan, Abed Al Hannan, Fahima, and Liliana. Each of them actively participates in the ‘Children at Risk’ programs. Mohamad expresses his joy as his children eagerly engage in the activities. He believes the moral and ethical lessons they learn, including teachings about God, are essential for their development.

Dilivan, in particular, has been involved in the programs for nearly three years. Her involvement has equipped her with significant knowledge and understanding of biblical teachings and enriched her spiritual growth.

The team recently noticed her eagerness for Gospel stories and her desire to learn more about Jesus and share Him with others. Additionally, she expressed her strong desire to spread faith, love, and serve Jesus.

“Before joining the Summer of Hope activities, my knowledge about God was quite limited; I only knew Him as the Creator. I never used to pray, and I didn’t even know how to. However, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to visit the center where I discovered who Jesus is and learned how to communicate with Him through prayer. When I first heard about Jesus, I felt astonished and really curious. So many questions filled my head, and I was trying hard to figure it all out. But as time went on, I started to understand more. Each time, I learned something new about Jesus, I felt amazed. His stories and teachings showed me how much he cared and loved people and how he could change lives, including mine.

I have learned that Jesus is God, and He sacrificed Himself for us. He’s our only Savior. Without Him, we would be drowning in sin. He died to wash away our sins, but we must believe in Him and ask Him for forgiveness. I believe in Jesus Christ, and every day my faith grows stronger. I love to know and learn more and more about Him. I enjoy reading the Bible, and I always watch YouTube videos about the Gospel stories. After being lost and distant from God, He found me, I found my way back to Him!” Dilivan said happily

Dilivan expressed that prayer brings her closer to God and makes her feel His presence even more. One day, she shared her inspiration and dream with the team, saying, “My dream is to learn guitar, play in the church, and praise and glorify the Lord. My goal is to testify and share with others the message of Jesus. I’ve already told my cousins about Jesus. There is no life without Him.”

Through our Summer of Hope programs, children can find refuge, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. They are provided with opportunities to explore true faith, discover their purpose, and deepen their relationship with God. These programs aim to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children, enabling them to pursue their dreams and make a positive change in their communities, like Dilivan and many other children.

A Haven of Love

Once upon a time in Syria, a country exhausted by war, a beautiful little girl named Waad was born. The joy of her arrival was shadowed by tragedy when her mother passed away two months after her birth. Little Waad needed care and love, and her grandmother, who held a boundless love for her granddaughter in her heart, took on the responsibility of raising her. Fleeing the dangers and destruction of their homeland, they sought refuge in Lebanon, yearning for a land where they could find safety and peace.

In Lebanon, Waad’s grandmother became her anchor. She dedicated herself to filling the void left by Waad’s mother, offering her a childhood filled with love and beautiful memories. Despite the challenges, the grandmother’s embrace was Waad’s safety.

Life in Lebanon was not easy, but the bond between Waad and her grandmother grew stronger with each passing day. Her grandmother provided the stability that Waad desperately needed. The girl’s father, who had remarried and started a new family, showed no concern for his daughter, abandoning her to her fate. This abandonment only deepened the bond between Waad and her grandmother, who became her sole protector and nurturer.

As Waad grew, she came to know our Summer of Hope team through various activities we conducted in the community. Her bright eyes and warm smile quickly captured our hearts. We established a connection with her and her grandmother, visiting them regularly to offer support and companionship. Despite the weight of her struggles, Waad always greeted us with a hopeful spirit, eager to share her world with us.

Waad would often ask us to pray for her, a simple request that spoke volumes about her faith and hope. She was always excited to introduce us to the family she lived with, her face lighting up as she spoke of her grandmother, the woman who had become her entire world.

Through our visits, we witnessed the strength of their bond and the impact of the grandmother’s love and care.

Grasping an Opportunity

Christian was born into a loving family in Taalabaya, Lebanon, where peace and affection filled their home. With her parents, grandmother, and brother, Christian’s upbringing was grounded in faith, attending weekly masses at their liturgical church. Initially enrolled in a prestigious private school, Christian’s education shifted amidst the turmoil of war, necessitating a move to a local public school near Zahle.

After completing her studies, Christian pursued a dual major in Political Sciences and Social Education at university, graduating with distinction in 2005. She embarked on a teaching career at The Lebanese Canadian School before transitioning to entrepreneurship, founding a successful clothing store in 2007.

In 2008, fate intervened when George, a client at her store and a member of the Internal Defense, caught Christian’s eye. Their courtship blossomed over two years, leading to a joyous union. Blessed with two daughters, the couple invested in a home of their own.

However, the economic downturn of 2019 plunged them into financial distress, wiping out their savings. With George’s salary barely covering basic expenses, Christian made the difficult decision to reenter the workforce after closing her business to care for her children.

A chance encounter at her daughters’ school led Christian to Hope Evangelical Church, where she was warmly welcomed by the pastor. Despite initial reservations, Christian embraced the fellowship and found solace in the community’s support during her trials. Through their prayers and encouragement, Christian’s faith deepened, leading her to dedicate her life to the Lord.

Grateful for the love and assistance she received, Christian expresses her heartfelt appreciation. “I thank you for your care, both emotional and material,” she shares. “I thank the Lord for using you to guide me on this journey of faith.”

As Christian continues to walk in the light of God’s word, let us lift her in prayer, asking for blessings upon her path and growth in her spiritual journey.

From Darkness to Light

Donya, whose heart is filled with faith and resilience, has depicted a powerful story of strength of spirit and steadfastness in the face of challenges. She began her life in Beirut amidst war and conflicts. She was able to endure that difficult period because she was being taught the Evangelical Church, which gave her the strength and resilience to bear various circumstances. However, when she returned to her hometown in southern Lebanon, she found herself facing new challenges related to caring for her brother who was suffering from mental health disorders.

After the death of her brother two years ago, challenges mounted before Donya. She found herself alone, struggling against economic and social hardships. From this dark place, she began her journey in search of light and hope, and the Heart for Lebanon organization served as an oasis where she found support and guidance. She initially benefited from the food aid, and over time, she started attending Bible study sessions. Despite social and economic challenges, she began to feel the difference that the Bible made in her life. It wasn’t just a source of comfort, but it became her guide in every step.

“In every worship gathering I attend, I feel that time is short, and I want to listen and delve deeper and deeper.” These words summarize Donya’s passion and desire to explore the depths of spiritual teachings. Thanks to her continued attendance and participation, she began to overcome loneliness and sorrow, finding hope and encouragement in each new story from the Bible.

Through this journey, Donya transformed from a person suffering from loneliness and distraction into a source of inspiration for those around her. She began to share the grace of the Bible with her sister and her daughter, and she became capable of speaking confidently and steadfastly about the values of faith. “I have learned a lot from the Bible, and I am committed to reading it and participating in church activities,” Donya said.

He Fills My Cup

George Raya is a Lebanese who was born in Zahle in the neighborhood of Barbara to a family consisting of a mother, father, 6 sisters, and 2 brothers. His father had a small factory for processing animal skin into leather, suitable for making clothes and shoes. His mother was a homemaker. The family’s financial situation was acceptable, although his father had a large responsibility towards his family and his younger sisters, as their parents passed away at a young age. However, his father always tried to make sure that nothing was lacking for them.

George attended a public school and was very happy there, being popular among his classmates and achieving good grades. However, when he was in seventh grade, the civil war started, and the family had to flee to Beirut for six months. When they returned to Zahle, George couldn’t continue his education because he had to work and help his father after the collapse of the economy in Lebanon due to the war. His father was diagnosed with cancer in 1989 and underwent many treatments before passing away two years later.

After his father’s death, George took over the business, but a customer gave him a fake check for a large order, which led to the closure of the factory since the business went bankrupt. He then sought help from his married siblings to buy a car with a taxi license plate, and he became a taxi driver. Once, while visiting his aunt’s house, he was introduced to their neighbor’s daughter, Fadia El Khoury. After a period of acquaintance, they got married in 1992 and were blessed with two sons, Michel and Elias, forming a harmonious and beautiful family.

In 2019, the economy in Lebanon began to deteriorate, affecting George’s taxi business. Once, one of the beneficiaries of a food aid program implemented by Heart for Lebanon asked him to drive them to the organization’s building to collect their rations. After a while, George decided to register himself at the organization’s office because he was in need. He started receiving aid every month. Eventually, a team from the Heart for Lebanon visited him and introduced him to Jesus Christ and His redemptive work on the cross, inviting him to attend Bible study meetings. He was deeply moved by their teachings and decided to attend the meetings regularly. This was a new experience for him, as he had never heard detailed sermons before.

George reflected on his upbringing in a Christian family and his lack of knowledge about the Bible, which motivated him to continue attending the Bible study meetings. He was astonished by the pleasant way in which he was greeted, as well as the loving aura that was present at all times. He became more and more interested, asking many questions, and the facilitator always provided answers from the Bible. He also got enrolled in the Discipleship Program which is also initiated by Heart for Lebanon. Through these studies, he developed a strong biblical understanding.

George said, “My prayer is that the ministry flourishes more and more and that the Lord pours out His blessings on it, and many people come and listen. My prayer also is that God always gives you strength. Many things have changed in my life, and the Holy Spirit deals with me in a way that always brings me to tears for every sin I commit.”

Please pray for George to grow more and more in the Word of the Lord, and for his family to come to know the Lord and become His children.

Rebuilding a Home

In the southern region of Lebanon, Joyce lives with her husband and four children. Their home, like many others in Lebanon, faces a common issue: water leakage during the winter months. The culprit? Poor construction materials and the absence of a waterproofing layer on the roof. This leads to humidity and cracks in the walls, posing a serious threat to their safety.

Joyce’s husband, a soldier in the Lebanese army, earns a modest income. With four children to support, he struggles to cover all their needs, let alone the expenses for home repairs. Joyce, dedicated to caring for her children, cannot work outside the home.

Their plight is worsened by the economic crisis gripping Lebanon, making it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. Paying bills and meeting monthly expenses has become a daunting challenge. Joyce’s husband shared “I work for a small monthly salary, so I cannot afford all the needs of my family nor the costs of the house maintenance, especially since we have four children. It is very difficult to pay the bills.”

Despite their troubles, Joyce and her family maintain a strong bond with H4L. Joyce faithfully attends Lebanese bible studies organized by the organization, doing her best to avoid skipping any sessions.

The launch of Heart for Lebanon’s 2024 home maintenance program represented a new hope for the family. The program targets families living in inadequate housing conditions. When learning of Joyce’s family’s struggles, our team sprang into action, inspecting the house and identifying exterior issues that needed urgent attention.

But their challenges don’t end there. With the added burden of school fees for their children, the family faces yet another obstacle. Fortunately, Heart for Lebanon steps in once again, providing scholarships that enable the children to attend school.

Grateful for the support they’ve received, Joyce expresses her heartfelt thanks to Heart for Lebanon, “You have built my house both physically and spiritually. I am forever grateful.” She shared that the scholarships have eased their financial burden, while the home maintenance work ensures a safe and leak-free winter. With Heart for Lebanon by their side, Joyce and her family can face the future with renewed hope, safety, and stability.
